Summary Growing of autochthonous sweet cherry cultivars (Gomilička, Stonska and Tugarka) and sour cherry Maraska in Meditteranean part of Republic of Croatia has a long tradition, these cultivars cover significant area becuse of good ecological conditions. However, potential of this production area is not nearly enough exploited. Autochthonous cultivars Gomilička, Stonska and Tugarka are not completely pomologically and economically evaluated, and intracultivar variability is not determined. Their yield is not regular. This can be caused by many reasons (inadequate flowering owerlapping, flower morfological characteristics, their mutual insufficient compatibility, which makes them unable to secure regular and abundant yield). Consequence is their gradual supersedion from production and repleacment with foreign cultivars. Further cultivation of high quality autochthonous sweet cherry cultivars assumes: selection of best types within population based on pomometric parameters, their genetic identification, determination of sterility allels and pollinatior selection. After this work is completed we will be able to organize modern systems of comercial swet cherry production. In relation to total growing area where it is cultivated, sour cherry cultivar Maraska attains high quality only in small part of Mediterrenian Croatia. In orchards we can find different morphological types of Maraska. Until now based on pomometrical measurments several types with good characteristics were singled out (Duguljasta, Recta, Brač 2, Sevid, Brela, Sokoluša, Tugare, Dvornice). However, intracultivar variability of Maraska has not been sufficiently studied, not at the level of pomological descripotors, or genetics, nor on dietotherapeutic value of the fruit. Research will comprise determination of intracultivar diversity of Maraska with usage of IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resource Institute) descriptors, genetic identification of clones with AFLP (Amplified Fragment Lenght Polymorphism) markers and fruit quality analysis of selected clones. Fruit quality will be determined based on inner and outer quality parameters, special attention will be given to antioxidant compositon, content and interrelation of specific antioxidants, and their dependence on genotype. Goal of this reseach is improvment of sweet cherry and sour cherry Maraska production by selecting specific genotypes with disairable characteristics from autochthonous population.
